Welcome Message

Welcome Message from APhO President

Physics is pervasive. Physicists have won Nobel prize not only in Physics but also in many other fields. There are at least four physicists who have won the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine, and there are no less than twenty two physicists who have won Nobel prize winners in Chemistry, including Ernest Rutherford who said: “I have observed many transformations while working with radioactive materials, but none as rapid as my own from physicist to chemist.” So, physicists are pretty versatile.

I believe that the training of a physicist partly accounts for this versatility. I know that there are also many quantitative analysts, or quants for short, in Wall Street who are trained in physics. So, in some sense, if you continue along this path and pursue a career in physics, you join this exclusive club of talented and versatile thinkers in society.

Malaysia is organizing the Physics Olympiad for the first time in history.  It is a remarkable moment, and you are participating in an amazing historical event in the history of Olympiads and mankind. You will be competing with each other in a serene and scenic town of Kampar in Perak, Malaysia. Kampar is a tin-mining town established in the early nineteen century.  In Malay, Perak means silver. However the origin of the naming of the state could have come from a famous Malay prime minister, or bendahara, Tun Perak. Perak is an ancient sultanate, perhaps more than five hundred years. Archeologists have dug a ten-thousand-year-old skeleton known now as the Perak Man.

Amid this idyllic setting, I urge you to do your best and compete in this competition. As usual, you should never forget that one of the loftiest goals in such competition is the formation of a deep and long-lasting friendship.  I wish you luck in your endeavor, especially in this competition.

Prof. Leong-Chuan Kwek

President of Asian Physics Olympiad.

Welcome Message from APhO2024 Chair

Dear Participants, Distinguished Guests, and Fellow Physics Enthusiasts,

Malaysia, known for its diverse culture, natural beauty, and warm hospitality, serves as the perfect backdrop for this prestigious event. Our commitment to education and scientific exploration aligns harmoniously with the APhO's mission, and we are excited to share the unique Malaysian experience with all participants.

APhO is not merely a competition; it is a platform that nurtures intellectual growth, encourages international collaboration, and fosters enduring friendships. Malaysia's rich multicultural tapestry adds an extra layer of diversity and warmth to this already exceptional event, creating an environment where you can push your boundaries, explore the frontiers of physics, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
As we gather for APhO 2024 in Malaysia, let us remember that the true essence of this competition lies not just in winning medals but in the joy of learning, the camaraderie of fellow participants, and the shared passion for physics. Malaysia's welcoming embrace adds a special dimension to this journey of scientific exploration.

I am eagerly looking forward to meeting each one of you, whether virtually or in person, as we embark on this extraordinary adventure against the backdrop of Malaysia's cultural richness and scientific fervor. Together, we will venture into the uncharted territories of physics and contribute to the advancement of human knowledge.

Once again, welcome to the 2024 Asian Physics Olympiad, hosted with pride in Malaysia, where the pursuit of excellence knows no bounds.
Let the journey begin!

Welcome Message from UTAR President

Welcome to Malaysia and the 2024 Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO).

On behalf of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), I extend my warm greetings to all the participants of Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) 2024. I am truly honoured that UTAR is the host of such a prestigious Olympiad event for the first time in Malaysia.

This is indeed a momentous occasion. UTAR is on the opening page of a promising new chapter in international cooperation and collaboration with regards to physics education.

This gathering of students and science-talented youths creates an opportunity for closer interaction and promotes international friendship and cooperation among the best young minds of the next generation in Asia and more. UTAR looks forward to sharing with you our rich cultural heritage and top-notch scientific research facilities.
APhO 2024 presents unique opportunities for young physicists to establish international friendships and future scientific collaborations, therefore I encourage every individual to make the most of every opportunity this unique event brings your way.

The APhO is an annual physics competition for high school students from Asian countries. It provides a platform for talented young physicists to showcase their abilities and exchange ideas.

I wish all participants every success during APhO 2024 and beyond.

Thank you.
With best wishes,
Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat

Welcome Message from UTAR Vice-President

Welcome to the 24th Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO).

Thank you for joining us in this annual competition. Your participation is important, and greatly supports our effort in producing more talents in the field of Physics. In fact, this effort started since 2000, and over the years, the responses received were overwhelming.

This year, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) is selected to host this competition, which served as platform for high school students from countries across Asia and Oceanic regions, who are passionate about physics, to showcase their talents, creativity, and problem-solving skills in solving complex and challenging physics questions..
We are indeed honored to be given this opportunity to join in this effort, because we understand that Physics is important, and has big impacts on our daily lives. In truth, we apply physics every day; to understand the natural world, to advance technologies, to solve problems and think critically, to innovate and invent, to increase productivity and efficiency, to connect globally, and to progress scientific research. All these continues to prove that simple motions like walking, running, cooking to bigger processes, like predicting weather patterns, communicating sounds, and medical diagnosis, are very much dependent on the application of Physics.

Now that we are living in the digital era, physics continues to expand its importance, and has played bigger roles in influencing the development and functioning of various technologies that have become integral to moden life, thus also bringing us more convenience and comfort. This, then, draws our attention again on the need to grow our Physician community. Your ideas, solutions, and innovative thinking is the drive we need to progress forward.

So thank you for making this effort a success, and I hope your passion for physics will continue to ignite and inspire others. I also hope you will take the time to explore Malaysia, and learnt of our rich history, culture, heritage, and traditions.

Thank you.
Ir. Prof. Dr Goi Bok Min
